HIDDEN VISION PROBLEMS CAN HINDER LEARNING: Good vision actually consists of three components. These three components are:
- Clarity- the ability to see small detail
- Comfort- the ability to read or use the eyes for long periods of time without fatigue
- Processing Skills- the ability to analyze and interpret visual input
Clarity
Conditions such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism can cause blurry vision. These conditions are easily treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses, which restore clear vision.
Comfort
Having 20/20 vision is important. However, seeing clearly does not guarantee comfortable vision. Many individuals see clearly yet find it difficult to read or concentrate for more than several minutes. Problems such as eye teaming, eye focusing and tracking deficiency can cause discomfort associated with reading. A child's inability to control the coordination of his eyes, inability to maintain focus, or difficulty aiming the eyes and scanning along a line of print, will result in the need to use extra effort to overcome these problems, leading to discomfort.
Processing Skills
The ability to analyze and interpret what the eyes see is referred to as visual processing or visual perceptual skills. This is an important aspect of visual comprehension, particularly for children in elementary school grades 1-4 as it is essential in learning letter and number recognition, reading and early math skills.
Find Out If Your Child Is At Risk?
Your child should have an early full optometric vision evaluation designed to detect learning related vision problems. We at Broward Eyecare are fortunate to have a pediatric vision specialist dedicated to diagnosing and treating the vision problems which might hamper your child's school performance.
